Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on February 20, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy is the youngest of six siblings. Her father was a musician and would play records at home. It had a huge influence upon her growing up. As young as 4years old, Nancy was aware she would be a performer. Her talents were developed through singing in the church choir. While still in high-school, she appeared regularly with Skyline Melodies. The same year when she was working, she began performing in nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she finished high school. After attending Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy left to be an experienced performer. Her first album was with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 to 1958. Nancy's first Dot Records recording was made during her time in the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Adderley urged her to go for a trip to New York in order to advance her career. She visited The Big Town, New York in 1959. She was hired to perform in The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx which was where her agent had heard her. His agent signed her with Capitol in the year 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess Who I Stopped Today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. After Adderley's influences she shifted her focus to R&B into jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to bring her to the forefront and her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. In the year following, this led to her being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
